Jeremy Accardo

Accardo played baseball (infield) at Mesa High (1997-99) He went on to play shortstop collegiately at Illinois State. He converted to pitcher and set the saves record at Illinois State after only two seasons as a pitcher. Accardo debuted as a major league pitcher on May 4th, 2005 vs the Diamondbacks. He has pitched professionally for several professional teams, including San Francisco, Toronto and Baltimore. His best season was in 2007 with Toronto where he converted 30 saves in 33 opportunities and going 21 and 2/3 scoreless innings. [More...]

Matt earned National Academic All-American Honors in 1999. He then became a High School All-State team member three-times. Brooks went on to win the 2000 5A individual State Championship in golf. Helped Red Mountain to team title in 2000. Brooks continued golf at Drake University where he earned two-time Missouri Valley Conference First Team honors, Medalist in the Big 4 Golf Championship in 2003 and 2004, and Co-Medalist in the 2005 Fidelity National Title Championship. Johnson was 1999 5A champion in 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle and anchored 200 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle relays to 1st-place finishes in the same year for Dobson High. He earned varsity letters for 3 years at Dobson. He was Arizona Male High School Swimmer of the Year in 1999, Regional Swimmer of the Year 1999, and Male Athlete of the Year at Dobson 2000. He won the 100 Freestyle and placed 2nd in the 50 Freestyle at the 2000 Junior Nationals West. Johnson went on to swim at the U. of Arizona where he earned First Team All-American for 200 Freestyle relay twice. [More...]

All-State golfer at Dobson High 4 years based on top 10 finishes at state. He went on to an outstanding career at ASU earning All-American honors 3 times. Reavie won the 2001 US Public Links Championship, which earned an invitation to the 2002 Masters. He entered the PGA Tour as a rookie in 2008, finishing in the top-5 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and winning the RBC Canadian Open, earning starts in both the 2009 US Masters and 2009 British Open. Reavie has continued to successfully place in 2011 PGA Tour events, including 2nd at Deutsche Bank Championship. [More...]

1991 Red Mtn. Girls Cross Country

 

Red Mountain breezed to its only title in the sport to date in school  history. Red Mountain bested runner-up Deer Valley 74-156. Scoring runners for Red Mountain were Erin Chavez (6th); Wendy Walls (9th); Dawn Stone (10th); Denise Ferguson (20th) and Courtney Teatro (29th). Sixth runner in was Misty English followed by Shannon Smith . Under the watchful eye of Coach David Hines, this was the first state championship in any sport for Red Mountain HS.

1991 Dobson Boys Track State

Battling with sister-Mesa schools in the sport in the 1990s was always a struggle for state supremacy, but the Mustangs broke through for their only track State title in school history -- male or female led by coach Hal Pigusch. Dobson (63 points) edged out Westwood (59) for the title and needed (as it turned out) at least a second-place finish in the final event of the night (1,600 relay) to win. Member of that 1,600 relay team were Jeremy Kopp, Skip Jones, Jason Hatos and Craig Crosby. Other Dobson boys that contributed to its scoring that night were: Jones (1st in long jump and 300 hurdles); Jeff Haynes (1st in 1,600 meters and 2nd in 3,200); Mark Knight (2nd in pole vault); Ryan Bohlander (2nd in 800 meters) and Crosby sixth in the 400 meters.

Anderson won four invitational titles his senior year Mountain View wrestling at 171 pounds. Added East Valley Region title at 171 prior to state meet. Won state title at 171 pounds in 1995. He went on to compete at the Police and Fire Games Toughest Competitor Alive earning Gold medals in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 at the Western State TCA Championships. Gray was a two-time 5A state high jump champ for Dobson. He cleared 6-10 in 1999 and 7-0 in 2000. Gray continues to be one of a handful of jumpers to clear 7-0 in state history. He went on to a successful career at Central Arizona College. Gray is listed on the Central Arizona College Top-Ten High Jumpers with a height of 7-0 in 2002. [More...]

Three-time 5A state long jump champion for Westwood in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Also captured 5A 100- and 200- meter State titles in track in 2000. He excelled in football as a 3-year starter, all-state pick and honorable mention All-American, Moore went on to play Wide Receiver for Bakersfield JC. In 2 years at Bakersfield JC, Moore caught 47 passes for 876 yards and 11 touchdowns also named Potato Bowls Most Valuable Player for 2001-2002. He then transferred to Washington State University. In 2003, he had 1,653 total yards. He caught 23 passes for 533 yards and 6 TDs, returned 33 kickoffs for 715 yards and one TD, and returned 43 punts for 405 yards. He signed as a free agent to the Seattle Seahawks in 2004. [More...]

Running for Westwood as a freshman, Stuart won Region titles in 100m, 400m, and two relays. She went on to State coming in 2nd in the 400m. Stuart was a rare 3-time track State Champion in the 400-meter in 1998, 1999 and 2000. She was undefeated 3 years in all dual, Regional, and State meets. Her time in the 400m still stands as a State record (54.87). Stuart continued her track career at Occidental College becoming a 6-time Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Champion in the 200m and 400m. Her 200m time stands as a SCIAC record (24.35). Again, Stuart was undefeated in all dual meets in the 400m while at Occidental. She is a 2-time All American for the 200m and 400m, 3-time NCAA Division III Championship, 10-time NCAA D-III National Qualifier, and the 2003 NCAA D-III Indoor Track and Field West Region Athlete of the Year. 1991 Mountain View Boys Golf

 

The Toros won a tight battle to win what would be the first of back-to-back State Championship titles.Mountain View (team total of 625) trailed for the team title by a couple strokes heading to the second day, but the team of Mike Jones (146); John Mercer (157); Brian Ricks (161); Chad Hossack (162) and Will Dueck (164) did enough in the final round to edge out Saguaro and Shadow Mountain (tied at 629) The team was coached by Norm Shill.

Blau was a multiple state champion swimmer for Red Mountain. She won the 50 Freestyle in 1996, 100 Backstroke in 1997, and both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke in 1998. She was awarded the US Marine Corps Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1996 and placed 9th at the 1999 World Cup in 50 Freestyle. Went on to compete at Texas A&M: 3rd in 100 Backstroke at 2000 Big Twelve Conference Meet, set freshman records for Texas A&M, competed in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke during the 2000 Olympic Trials. Transferred to UC Irvine in 2002 and set records in 50 and 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. Nunes was voted 2011 City of Mesa Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year and continues to coach for MPS. David Hines

Hines expertise as a coach came in track and cross country. He guided Mesa High to a State track title in 1988 after being Region Champions in 1983, 1985, and 1986 and State Runner’s-up in 1984 and 1985. He coached the Rabbits to a Cross–Country Reaching Championship in 1987. He went on to coach at Red Mountain Track winning a Region Championship in 1993 and State Runner-up in 1995. He coached the Mountain Lion girls cross country team to State title in 1991 after winning Region Championships in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and State Runners-up in 1988 and 1990. Hines went on to become Athletic Director at Mountain View serving in that role from 1996-2008. He was a Clinic Speaker at the National Track Coaches Clinic, Arizona Track Coaches Clinic and New Mexico Coaches Association Clinic. [More...]

Patience won 50 and 100 freestyle at State in 2000 helping Mountain View to 2nd place team finish. He became a 4-time High School All American and was named Arizona Swimmer of the Year in 2000. He went on to swim collegiately at BYU and earned 2-time NCAA D-1 All-American in 2007, Mountain West Academic All-Conference Award, placed Top Three at the Mountain West Conference Championship. He was the Mountain West Conference Champion in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay in 2007 and competed in every meet for BYU during his 4 years with the team. [More...]

1991 Westwood Boys Cross CountryThe second State title in as many years for the Warriors under coach Kyle Sawyer.

Westwood won the title easily over runner-up Corona del Sol. Westwood totaled 80 and Corona del Sol 147. Westwood placed its five scoring runners in the top 33 led by Webb Shelley (2nd); Jeremy Schurz (4th); Jeff Barehand (22nd); Mario Gomez (26th) and Joel Calkins (33rd).
